Not legitimate…

I understand where you’re coming from, but…”

This is not a legitimate way to signify that you truly “understand” where someone is coming from.

If you understand, then there’s no need to supplement what anyone is saying with your own opinions.

If you understand, then you are willingly forfeiting your “right” to be right.

You place yourself in that person’s position and you stay there.  It doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything they believe, but if you’re saying that you understand, then allow your understanding to be all that you need.

I despise wishy washy phrases like this.
